Father of American Psychology


William James is acknowledged as the father of
American psychology. His most famous statement
that I have embraced in my coaching work is: “The
greatest revolution in our generation is the
discovery that human beings by changing the inner
attitudes of their minds can change the outer
aspects of their lives.” What he is talking about is
thought.

What he is saying is that when we change the way
that we think we will change the way that we live. I
have found that few, if any, individuals really know
what a thought is and how to control one’s thinking
to move ahead to the completion of a carefully self
selected goal or goals. Again thoughts.
One of Emerson’s most well known quotations is
“the mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.”
Why is that? I think that it is because they don’t
know how to get what they want and settle for what
they end up having. No idea of the power of their
own thoughts.


“If one advances confidently in the
direction of his dreams and endeavors to
live the life which he has imagined, he will
meet with success unexpected in common
hours.” Henry David Thoreau. I have
learned to do this and am, indeed, meeting
success unexpected on common hours.

Albert Ellis, “people and things do not
upset us, rather we upset ourselves by
believing that they can upset us.”
Thoughts.

I coach individuals, groups and teams on
how to recognize their thoughts and in a
fool proof method direct their thoughts to
the achievement of their selected goals.
No more “lives of quiet desperation”.
